I pretty much know the differences between them (I think). I have a 552 on my DPMS. I'm looking for glass for my POF. The 553 is about 1/4" taller/higher than the 552, it uses CR123 batteries and it mounts by two ARMS throw levers. Opinions???

TIA,

TS

AA batteries are much cheaper. If you want to use lithium buy AA Lithium that's what's in my Eotech. I do like the idea since you would use the same batteries for the lights and the Eotech but for my money I will stick with the 552.

I've got no doubt we will carry them, but my duty weapon will stay with my 552.

No, projected life isn't any longer than the 552 AA series from what I'm read so far.

ETA- I like the ARMS mount built in, however, I'm not a fan of the large price jump. Its pretty obvious that the ARMS portion isn't coming free, so I can understand that the redesign, and price structure would go up, but I guess I'm just cheap. laugh.gif

I'll also be staying with the 552 on my carbines.

The only advantage the 553 would give me would be that it uses the same batteries as my weapon light. Regardless this is a non-issue for me because I have a lot of other things at home that use Lithium AA's so I will always be stocking them.

The built in ARMS mount will actually limit my mounting choices and I also prefer an absolute cowitness and like mouting my EOTech directly to the rail. If I ever go with a riser/QD mount I will be getting the LaRue EOTech mount.

The 553's tethered battery compartment is a neat feature but it's not something that's an issue with me.

At this time the 553 is not worth the extra cost over a 552 to me. It will not do anything that my 552 can't do and would even limit certain mounting options for me, YMMV.

Stickman,

You aren't cheap you're just being sensible, why pay for features you don't want or won't use... thumbsup.gif

It seems odd to me that they didn't bump up the waterproof rating to something much higher, go with a higher battery life, or a reticle upgrade. Then again, if the military asks for a specific product, I guess there wouldn't be much reason to spend extra time making changes as opposed to just getting it done ASAP.

As Stick said, the ARMS mounts will add some cost.

Off the top of my head the 553 is about a $150 upcharge over a 552. You figure about $70 avg per ARMS mount - times 2 mounts and that will make up for most of the difference.
You also get the added features of 66ft submersible, tethered batt cover, batt to match your tac light (123), sexy earth tones, and a bit taller.

I think the 512 will stay their biggest civvie seller.

Glad I stumbled on this thread. Answer a lot of questions I had. Think I will go with the 512. I see no night vision in my future.

If CR123 batteries do this to a weapon light what would happen to a 400.00+ EOThing.

The batteries were melted bulb and lens gone, smoke and gasses for about 5-6 seconds.

I'm willing to bet that was due to the light and not the batteries. I had one of those an it fell apart on me when I was changing batteries.
