The Gunsite video said the main reason was to allow easier loading with the bolt closed...which made sense. Some of my mags load easily, bolt forward, some of them require a lot of force to seat.

Doesn't the military teach that mags are loaded full?

That's why I do it. Tac reloads wink.gif It does make a difference.

I started to download my mags by one round.

Though it is rare with good mags that you will have problems with loading all the way to full capacity, I had a couple mags where I had feeding problems with them if I loaded them to the top, but they worked fine it I took out one or two rounds.
So rather than find out the hard way that the mag I happen to throw into my rifle doesn't like being filled to capacity, I rather play it safe and downlaod it one or two rounds just make sure the magazine loads and feeds correctly.

I don't think you are at any risk if you just have 28 rounds instead of 30. That is why you carry extra mags.

I've had FTF problems with loading mags to full capacity. I now download two rounds in 20rd and 30rd mags...

I got an email the other day, with an article from a firearms instructor suggesting that all rifle mags should have at least 1/2" of compression when fully loaded, and if they don't, download until they do. I can achieve 1/2" by dropping only one round, so I'll do that. I've never had a problem with them fully loaded, but if my butt is on the line...

Yes, we are. In my opinion downloading by two rounds isnt necessary. WE usually dont it the trail without a full magazine in our weapons.

The SA80 mags have been "range" reliable for me but I wouldn't want to carry them into combat.

These are empty weights:

Steel SA80 = 8.1oz
Thermold = 4.1 oz
USGI 30 = 4.0 oz
USGI 20 = 3.0 oz

I store my mags fully loaded.

The Corps taught me to load a 30 rd mag to 28 rounds.
The mag seats easier for loading/ tac-reloading/ etc.
and it feeds easier.

My mags are all at 28 rounds.

If I'm in the shit so bad that not having those two rounds gets me killed, I shouldn't have been there in the first place.
