We can take buck or doe it doesnt matter in ohio. This year in some counties you can take up to 6 deer this season.

Back when I was able to hunt I shot LOTS of does. And still would if I could get the time off. They taste the same and the buck/doe ratio is way out of wack in Michigan. Too many does. Causes population problems.

In northern MI where the family hunts, I believe it's 2 bucks and as many doe tags as you want to buy.

In Arkansas the state is split into different hunting zones. The number of bucks and does a hunter can kill is based on the current and target population for the zone. If the game and fish commission wants to increase the number of deer in the zone no or fewer does can be killed. The number of deer than can be killed in any zone range from 3 bucks and 3 does in some zones to 2 bucks only in others.
Deer in Arkansas were hunted to almost extinction during the depression. When my father was a child he very rarely saw a deer. By the time he was in college he typically killed two or three a year hunting in more populated parts of the state. When I was kid it was rare to be able to kill a deer on my grandparents farm so we bought a farm 60 miles away to hunt on. Last year my father hunted successfully all but one day on my grandparents farm. In 20 years the zone my grandparents farm is in has gone from no does allowed hunt all season to get a deer territory to one doe allowed and you will probably get a deer the first weekend.

Me, I do trust Fish and Wildlife to get it right in terms of bag limits. Here in Fl. it is very generous. That being said, I don't want to kill Bambi's mom, I want Bambi. Harsh you may say, but my two favorite hobby's are cooking and hunting. I have zero desire to pay a bunch of money to mount a deer's head on my wall, particularly when it is gamey from the rut. Your mileage may vary and I make no judgements, but me, I want a quick one shot kill and lots of tasty venison. That's half the point of the excersize. Last year's fawn when the spots are gone (veal without the cruelty) and many tasty meals. You may call me a serial child killer, but I don't give a rat's rump about the antlers, I'm hunting for the pot. That said, population dynamics may say bucks only etc., again I trust the local DNR to know what they are doing, but all things being equal if I have a choice of shooting a button buck or a ten pointer, the big guy is going to walk away unscathed. In Wi as long as it doesn't have spots it's fair game. I have 4 children and feeding them Is why I hunt, between me and the oldest we usually take 3-4 deer a year. I shoot whatever comes on my land and so does my oldest.

Well, Mule Deer and Blacktails do not have the population density that whitetails have. Add that that California has protected Mountain Lions since 1990 and you can see why they have to generally preserve does. What bugs me about the whole situation is that the laws are not based in science but in politics and warm fuzzy feelings people get from "protecting" certain animals that really do not need the protection as they can be harvested sustainably with limits and seasons.
Having said that, Sarge I would have never guessed you were a poacher. The fawn did not look at you with its big brown questioning eyes and ask "Why did you shoot my mommy?" I would suggest it was your own sense of guilt nagging at you and deservedly so. In many areas, does and even fawns are legal game and tasty too and as such should elicit no negative feelings from anyone who chooses to harvest them.

In TN we can whack'em and stack'em. If it is brown it goes down. No sleep lost over a doe in the dodge. the horns look good on the wall but I dont care how you try to cook them they come out tough. I hunt primarly for does and if a big'en steps out I will sling a round or arrow at him but I aint picky. If it dont have spots I will shoot it.

QUOTE (Sgtar15 @ November 3rd 2009 11:44 PM) Shoot it or let it live?
In my great state of California, we don't shoot Does.
Why?
Well, Does give birth to the young so we only shoot things with antlers.
that's the law. Do you really want to start talking about California law? QUOTE Do you kill the moomies without guilt?
What if a fawn is nearby?
Still shoot the moomy? I haven't hunted deer in a long time, I have never been a "deer hunter" but I have shot a few deer. Would I feel guilty for shooting a doe? Nope... it's just an animal, and it has it's place in the circle of life like everything else does. que Elton John....

QUOTE (Sgtar15 @ November 3rd 2009 11:44 PM) Is killing Bambi's mommy legal in your state? yes legal QUOTE And.......... Do you kill the moomies without guilt? Yes QUOTE What if a fawn is nearby? Still shoot the moomy? Depends, sometimes shoot the fawn, they are smaller and a more challenging target. Especially with all the spots, brings a whole new meaning to "Pick a spot". I do draw the line at shooting a doe that has a fawn that is still nursing, I won't do that, unless of course I shoot the fawn first.

QUOTE (Aahhyes68 @ November 4th 2009 9:22 AM) Here in MI the DNR tells us what we can shoot. It's all about controlling the herd population. Depending on the area, some farmers are given block permits to shoot 10-50 deer in a season. Heck, come opening day on Nov. 15th, there will be one of the largest army's in the world armed out in the woods. Just imagine, over 1,000,000 armed hunters dressed in orange ready to assult "Bambi". Most of them with a hangover . Amen! If you wind up hunting on state land you practically have to have a flashing red light with ya there's so much traffic in the woods.

Can't eat the antlers. If I see a doe and a buck, the doe dies. Tastes to me, so much better and I would rather let someone else get the horns for their wall than go to waste with me.
