Shoot it or let it live?

In my great state of California, we don't shoot Does.

Why?

Well, Does give birth to the young so we only shoot things with antlers.

that's the law.

Plus, we don't have so many deer that they are a severe problem, and hunting Does would probably actually lead in a decrease of the population.

But what say y'all?

Is killing Bambi's mommy legal in your state?

And..........

Do you kill the moomies without guilt?

What if a fawn is nearby?

Still shoot the moomy?

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

The Jerky made from a fawn or a doe tastes just as good, if not better than the jerky coming from a buck.

Bambi's mom sure was tasty!

Every state is different. Down south if you don't cull a lot every year many more will die and they will ruin farms and homesteads. Farther north the weather and their sub-species puts them fewer on the ground.

By and large, I'm fairly satisfied with most state's game commissions. Most do a real good job at sizing up what needs to be done. Some of the firearms and ammo restrictions for hunting are a bit silly in places, but the actually tag limits seem well thought out. And since they rely on hunters to pay most of the state game warden bills they know they have to try to offer the best season they can.

Yes, I am serious.

In California they are not a nuisance. In other states they are as you say, and then I can understand shooting everything in sight if needed.

But here, it is not needed.

So, my question is if when are not a nuisance. Again, in California the deer live mopstly in the forrest and are RARELY a problem to any farmers in the central valley.

ANd if there are, they are quickly killed.

But that's different.

Same here, the Cali GFish and Game Dept does a pretty damn fair job.

We have different zones based on location and population.

You put in for two zone choises and they sort of hold a raffle to who gets what zone.

Legal AND delicious! eat smiley.gif

In the 6th most populous state in the union, we're STILL outnumbered by deer, and dangerously so! Deer/vehicle collisions have been on the rise for years, even in metro areas. DECLINING numbers of hunters doesn't help.

PA has lengthened hunting seasons for all types of weapons in the last few years, allowed more hunting on state lands, & the taking of up to 2 antlerless to each antlered deer for flintlock and rifle hunters - and all with little visible effect. Lobbying efforts CONTINUE to extend and expand the deer season, and as the Bambiists are concentrated primarily in the sheeple preserves of Filthadelphia & da' 'BURGH, most likely WILL win the day in PA's state legslature. thumb.gif

As we like to say here; "Bambi - not JUST for breakfast - OR shot by accident -anymore!" bigsmile.gif

Yes, I love deer meat myself, jerky mostly.

And #1 beans, I don't care WTF you say, are NOT an original igrediant for chilli. Chilli is cheap meat, peppers, and spices. EVERYTHING else is optional and an add on.

PERIOD.

#2 Call me a pussy, call me a tree hugger, call me a PETA loving mommies boy, I don't care. But when I was a teenager I shoot a Doe. The fawn was right next to her. She dropped in a second. I swear till this day that the fawn looked right at me and asked:" WTF dude? You just killed my mom! NOW wtf am I supposed to do?"

It made to never want to deer hunt again. Keep in mind, before that I sluaghtered many chickens, fowl, goats, sheep and more. But somehow....I don't know how or why...but somehow shooting that doe was just different. And yes, it was an illegal shot, I was only supposted to hunt Bucks. STill, we did not waste the meat. I almost wanted to shot the damn fawn so he would stop looking at me. He didn't leave his mothers side till I got about 20' away and "finished her off".

Yeah...I know, I am pussy.

I shoot as many female deer as I legaly can every year. Only mature adult females, never the young of the year. They taste better to my family than a buck all pumped up on testosterone this time of year.
I do not shoot any adult does with fawns, those i let walk. However if there is more then one adult doe in the group, I am dragging one out of the woods with me, period.
I only shoot an antlered deer if he is old and mature and has a nice looking rack, other then that I let them walk to go out and 'pump' the woods full of more does for me to kill in the next few years.

Ohio is a one buck per year state. This year with the right permits and if the right hunting areas are used you can get 12 deer but still only one buck.
I do not hunt the whole state so this year I will be able to get 10. That is 3 more then previously allowed so i won't have to pay the higher price for hunting out of state to get enough red meat to last my family a year.
So far this year I have arrowed 3 does and plan on getting more before our week of gun season.

Here in MI the DNR tells us what we can shoot. It's all about controlling the herd population.

Depending on the area, some farmers are given block permits to shoot 10-50 deer in a season.

Heck, come opening day on Nov. 15th, there will be one of the largest army's in the world armed out in the woods.

Just imagine, over 1,000,000 armed hunters dressed in orange ready to assult "Bambi".

Most of them with a hangover bigsmile.gif .

I tend to not shoot the real little guys/gals. Just isn't as much meat there. A good 3 year old doe is about perfect for the taking. I took a 3.5 year old buck this year and he is perfectly tasty! But does do taste a bit better without all that testosterone running in em.

We can take 3 does/day in my section of TN but only 3 bucks for the season. Between my son, grandson, nephew-in-law and me we killed 22 does and one monster buck last season. That didn't even dent the population. We try to avoid killing the button bucks by being close enough to tell but the the big adults nannys are fair game for the long shots. We don't shoot bucks under 3 1/2yrs old except for the grandsons, we'll let them take a good 1 or 2 1/2yr old. They both killed does last weekend on the Juvenile Hunt using some of my 223 reloads. Does and yearling females are much tastier than the bucks. We usually make jerky and peperoni out of the bucks. My wife cooks the roasts just like beef pot roast, it's killer, tender and delicious. Muzzleloader season opens Saturday, can't wait, there'll be fresh venison soaking before noon.
