First off, Hello!
I found this site doing my futile google searches about my topic at hand. And honestly I like this place better than that ("other") forum.

My history with firearms is short but involved.
I currently own several which include; Ruger 10/22 (modified heavily), Mossberg .22 Magnum Rifle 28" barrel(passed down from grandfather to father to I), Ruger MKIII pistol, and shotguns (assorted, for hunting....in ohio)

Currently I'm looking into and gathering info on AR rifles.
The ruger10/22 I have now is modified with the Nordic AR .22 chassis.
But I'm growing away from that and would rather dedicate that rifle to a wood stock and "bench" type gun.
I would much prefer to have a REAL AR.

What I know so far:
1. I'm almost positive I'll be using the Spikes M4 upper. The astounding reviews really have me sold. I don't know to much about AR maintenance and operation so I would prefer to have something that's solid and proven.
2. The form I want; short, tactical, CQC, lightweight...all of the above.
3. I can't leave well enough alone and have to tinker and have a one off of everything.
4. That I don't know too much about how to do this AR stuff. < haha bigsmile.gif

My questions regarding dedicated .22 uppers are:
1. Does the spikes tactical or any dedicated upper for that matter use the Gas Tubes recoil system?
2. Does it matter what lower I buy? Obviously other than quality. Mostly b/c at some point I would like to put a .223 upper on this chassis.
3. What lower is best?
4. Is the lothar walther upgrade on the spikes kit worth it?
5. Can the spikes upper(other than the reciever) be modified like a normal AR upper. I.E. with different hand guards, charging handles...etc.

6. Anything else I should know?

I hope to learn a lot here. Would really cut down on my "googling"
And It's nice to get advice from a select group of people. Rather than random searches.

Thanks, in advance.

Hey Matt welcome.gif to the Armory.

Have you looked at the dedicated .22 Smith and Wesson AR Rifle?

Now with the 22 upper alone, I would look into a conversion kit. Energizer has a couple and he should be by soon maybe he can help you out.

All .22 ARs I know of use blow back as their means of operation.

It doesn't matter much as far as function goes. There are lowers that are better than others. The main differences are extra features or forged vs. billet.

3. What lower is best?

You will probably get a lot of different answers for that. I really like my Tactical Innovations forged lower that I got from JTAC. The rear (takedown) pin detent capture screw takes care of the headache if you decide to change stocks. The upper tensioning pin will remove any play between the upper and lower as well. JTAC TI lower link.

4. Is the lothar walther upgrade on the spikes kit worth it?

The Green Mountain barrel than comes standard is supposed to be match grade and I've heard good things about GM barrels for 10/22s so I would take that extra money for other goodies.

It should be. I can't think of any reason it wouldn't be.

6. Anything else I should know?

The only thing I can think if is that the bolt catch/release may not work with a .22lr upper.

so today I've been considering if I should even get an AR in .22.

Why not just get a standard .223 right?
makes sense...I already have a .22.

what do you guys think?

who's uppers/lowers should I be looking at if I'm going to do .223.
I would love to keep this cheap.

back to the drawing board.

Do you have a price range/budget? Some people's cheap is someone else's upper range of their price range.

cheap= under 1000
ideally cheap= under 700

Logical expectation also tells me I'm not really going to get much for $700. If anything.

But really I want a very basic setup. I need to learn first, and I'm a very hands-on person.
A small compact, inexpensive yet expandable platform would be perfect.
Is that too broad? surrender.gif

EDIT: I'm also open to a prebuilt system.
As it would give me a chance to see a pro built AR, and then I could literally just swap parts from there.

For a good but fairly inexpensive AR you might look at the Sportical from DPMS. There is a guy here locally that sells them for $700 plus tax and transfer fees ect.. It is a decent starter AR for sure. thumb.gif
