I seem to have developed a little coyote problem in my area and I need to drop a couple of them. The problem is that they only come around at night and if I fire my AR at night in this area, there will be a few terrified neighbors calling the cops and some who would just call the cops out of spite even if they knew what was going on.
Just because it isn't illegal, doesn't mean that it is the prudent thing to do. I might could get away with using .22 subsonic, but I don't know if that is enough bullet for the job. It seems quite weak for a clean kill. They don't show up every night, but when they do, it is always around 11:30 or so. Any ideas on how to take care of this little issue discreetly before our small pets start disappearing?
I have also seen pig tracks as well, but I need to check on the laws concerning them before I go out and drop one of them. They have not been a nuisance, but I would love to get me some wild ham and bacon. oh yea.gif

Rev. R. Farrier

I dont remimber what the law is down in Jawja is about hunting yotes at night. As far as the folks next door you could either use a subsonic or invest in a suppressor oh yea.gif . You may also let them know that you are doing them a favor also so if they hear a crack between this o'clock and that o'clock it is just you protecting them. If you are going to sit out and wait for them or maybe use some protien enhanced motovation to bring them in I would sit there with a cross bow with a rail light mounted on it. flea.gif

As far as the wild bacon running around unless they have changed the law, pigs are fair game all year, no limit, no gender restrictions. I think you can even hunt them on a small game lic but I am not for sure because I always got the sportsmans. Now I do remimber that if you got one, if you wanted to have it processed you had to take it to a state certified wild pork processor not just a regular processor. One way to deal with the little porkers is with bow and arrow. (this also makes a quiet shot on the yote dogs if you can get them in close enough). You can check on the GA laws with cross bow for pigs.

If all else fails invite everybody here on a pork hunt and BBQ. I bet we can get it gutted, skinned and in the ground quick, fast, and in a hurry. really.gif We can school some of these yankees about a pig picken.

What is the coyote problem? Killing chickens or something?

For most farmers the presence, of coyotes is a problem. They are dangerous and have been know to hunt in packs if need be. They have even been know to attack children (though not very often) and domestic pets. They are a big problem for hunters as they will hunt fawns, and destroy turkey and other nests of ground nesting birds.

I don't know about GA but here in TX we can spotlight them. If you use a red filter for the light they can't see it and will come in very close. We usually use 2 people. 1 shines the light and works the call and the other is the shooter. Either bow or rifle.

You could look into the trapping laws for state if you are concerned about noise. The only thing you might be concerned about is if you or your neighbors have pets that run around. You could also put them down with a bow. Or you could actively hunt them during the day with a firearm.

I would pop a round off one night and then lock everything away just to see what sort of response you get from the police. Around here gunshots outside of town are no big deal. If you are in town, I wouldn't go there, legal or not.

During the daytime, get a woodpecker call.......they'll come to that when they won't come to any other. It's my favorite call.

As one who has battled coyotes on two different pieces of property, call the local game warden, and then call the local LE, then get to it. Let them know ahead of time that you'll be legally killin' coyotes that are doing bad things in your neighborhood.

Call or bait them in if it is legal to bait. If not or if you are in a urban setting check the trapping laws. Here in Mi.w have a real bad urban deer problem and the morons are screaming don't hurt Bambi. Plus the fact that the lil' furry So&sos are in town so we can't hunt them. Grrrrrr just remember sometimes the best correct tool for a job is not your correct best tool.

I don't know how much ground you have around you (acres you own) but I have made live traps out of hog wife, welded them up etc and baited them for the yotes. They are very crafty and smarter than a 5th grader you bet. We raise German Shorthair Pointer dogs (bird hunting) and they do cause us some problems, especially when one of our Ladies comes into her heat cycle. The kennel is fenced and so is the 2 acre compound those dogs exercise in during the day, even the floors are fenced with 2 x 4 no climb fencing. However Mr. yote does come calling at night. I have caught a couple but not near what I would have liked to get in numbers mind you.

Gonna have to agree. Call the game warden, see what he says. Then call the LE, and let them know that you talked to the game warden about the problem, and this is the route you are going to take. A gunshot in the night is worrisome, and some "quiet life" city transplants may call the police, but if they know what the sound is, they should leave you alone.

Coyotes are legal year round in GA. You can't use sound supressors to hunt. Not sure about night restrictions, but we are entering the time of year when 'yotes seem to start getting hungrier and the young pups start splitting up from the pack. distressed rabbit calls and some maderate use of interogation or challenge howling could draw them out before sunset.

Good archery tackle is effective if you are judicious about camouflage and calling, and get one into bow range.

Or try a crossbow with a red dot. You'll have better range and no noise.
