This subject interests me and I didn't want to derail the group buy thread.

Does anyone like compasses anymore? I think they are useful in a lot of situations. i understand how GPs can work, but I think compasses also have a relevant place. Especally if you are planning a route on a topo map, looking for sometiing in the sky, or getting exact bearings, i think compasses are worth having.

They don't suffer from overhead canopy problems that can affect GPS, there are no battery issues, and if the Chinese knock out or GPS syastem, they will still work.

I think learning to use a compass is still a valuable skill.

The only time I had a problem recently was when the TSA wouldn't let me bring my liquid filled compass on board. smiley_smartass.gif

I have a good old standard USGI issue Lensatic compass on my vest. Works when teh GPS wont. No it dont tell me the same thing the GPS will or as fast but it dont need batteries or an open sky to work. No eletronics and tough enough to survive an airplane crash.

I would like to get one and practice then teach the kids to use it. I have not messed with one since boy scouts.

I always think it is a good idea to have a compass as a backup.

I have compasses all over the place from better ones for map navigation to cheap ones for simple direction.

Just knowing things like the highway is north of here and its that direction, will save you many years of your life otherwise wasted wondering around like a blind man in the desert.
