Hello all,
I am getting pretty close to buying my first M1 Garand. The rifle I obtain will be used to compete in National Match style competitions so it has to be an 'as issued' battle rifle to fall into the guidelines, no carbines, no modifications of any kind.

I have a question for you folks that are much more knowledgeable with this rifle than I am. If for whatever reason you were only able to own 1 M1 Garand for competition style shooting which one would you prefer to get and why?
What (if any) differences are there in these rifles concerning the manufacterer? Is there anything I need to look for or stay away from?

Thank you in advance for your time and opinions in the matter,
Kenny.

I assume you will be getting it from CMP, correct?

The most problematic were International Harvester. HRA and SA would both be good guns.

Yes I will be getting one from the CMP in Ohio.
I looked at a few of them when I was up there a few weeks ago and I mean to tell you some of these guns look fantastic! I will not be buying one that looks good enough to be hung above a fireplace, mine is going to used quite a bit ( I hope).

On a side note, the CMP store is a great place to check out.

Funny story:
The day of our competition I woke up to my wife having my wallet and car keys sitting on the counter for me along with my social security card in case I needed it. When I put my s/s card in my wallet I noticed that my Visa and a blank check that I normally carry (for emergency use only) were removed and I did not get them back until I got back home.
Very smart wifey!
I would have came home with a Springfield M1 that were loaned to Korea. These things looked as if they were brand new and they were only $800.00. They were in MINT condition.

A springfield Special or Service Grade would serve you well, I'm sure. You can always swap to a better barrel later if you need to. You'd have to be a little crazy to buy a shooter Garand anywhere other than the CMP.

Internation Harverster problematic? How so?
All rifles were built to the same spec using the same plans. SA. WRA. HRA and IH. Same plans. Using the same gauges. The only difference was the number of weapons each company produced.
Maybe IH would be rarer.
Most of the CMP rifles I've seen look like they have had the full depot rebuild. So if I was picking I just look around till I saw the rifle that said buy me. My problem with the M-1 is they all say that to me. bigsmile.gif

The only dumb question there is is the one you don't ask. That is the one that will kill you.

Hope for peace plan for war. That way you will get no big surprises.

The M-1. The greatest battle implement ever devised by man.

I grabbed him by the collar and jerked him to his feet.

So I started to believe the things he said.

The more I look into this the less it seems to matter what kind I get. Everyone says that all of these rifles perform great.
I think the most important thing is to get one and start using it as much as possible.

You need to get all the paperwork done and mailed in with yer payment info. There is probably a long wait.
