QUOTE(gunguy @ Oct 14 2004, 01:40 PM)
I was happy to get rid of one for $300, back in 1986, and it had a magazine, too. I considered the thing to be entirely too bulky and heavy, and the safety was awkward to use, too.

Agree , the Bren Ten is probably one of the most overated pistols ever.

"Agree , the Bren Ten is probably one of the most overated pistols ever."

The Bren Ten had a lot of things going for it and a couple of major things working against it. However, in response to saying the gun was overrated, a line John Wayne used often comes to mind: "Not Hardly".

I don't think the term overrated applies to the Bren-Ten.

The Bren-Ten is not popular because it is supposed to be ultra reliable or the ultimate 10mm shooter but rather it was the Daddy of the 10mm and it's rare. It is purely a collector piece for those reasons.

That is really not a bad price for a SM in the condition stated. Everyone should be able to have the "experience" in owning one Bren Ten at least. It took me many, many years to obtain my M&P, original white box, manual, three dedicated 10mm magazines, and (just for collecting) the Jeff Cooper Commerative wooden box. It is a so-called "safe queen". I'll never fire it. But to have a true piece of firearms history, well, need I say anymore?

Since this thread has turned into a discussion about the Bren-Ten I am going to go ahead and move it from Buy/Sell to Out of Production so that discussion may continue.

Bren Ten overrated? Underrated more likely. If you don't mind packing a full size 1911 or S&W then a Bren shouldn't be a problem. Many people complain about the crossbolt safety, but this really isn't an issue. The only thing I use it for is a sort-of hammer drop safety when clearing the gun. For normal carry the standard thumb safety is more than adequate. Personally I prefer the shorter SF model and if there was a currently produced quality version available I wouldn't hesitate to carry it. (No I wouldn't carry a Witness. The Witness is CZ based as is the Bren, but it's definately no Bren!)

I think the Bren Ten was a good idea and a good design, unfortunately there were some manufacturing problems and a lack of magazines. If D&D had been blessed with tons of money and had sufficient magazines to go with the guns, then the history of the Bren Ten may have been significantly different. But, as it turned out, the Bren Ten is the stuff of collectors and the attempts to resurrect the Bren have failed.

If CZ would wise up and produce the 97B in 10mm that would be close enough for me :D
