Nice rifles fellers. This is NOT a thread I should be looking at right now. I have always wanted to trick out a bolt gun,

This is my M95 Steyr. It was made in Austria in late 1930's sometime, but a lot of them were made in Budapest, Hungary. These rifles have a straight pull Mannlicher bolt, and shoot the 8X56R cartridge. It is roughly equivalent to a .338, 210 grain bullet, but not quite as fast. This one is a carbine, also called a 'stutzen'. They are very inexpensive and a lot of fun to shoot, but ammo is expensive and hard to find. http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/c/...roducts_id/2169Here you can see how short the barrel is, about 18 inches I believe. Most of these were cut down from a longer barreled rifle for cavalry use. They were also used by the Austrian and Hungarian military and police. Look at the ramped rear site. Those numbers represent meters, in the hundreds. SO, 22 means 2,200 meters! That's optimism! It's actually very accurate with these open sights. You'd be surprised how accurate these old guns can be. Some day I plan to take it hunting.

What bolt action .30-06 or .270 would you buy if you only had about $600 to spend?
Remington, Winchester, or Ruger all seem pretty easy to get in that price range...

QUOTE (Janitor @ August 5th 2009 6:07 AM) Hey Doc - what did you use for masking the paint job on that Sako? I removed the scope from the action. Then removed the barreled action from the stock and took off the buttpad. I sprayed a coat of OD green down and let it dry. Then tore up some 2" blue painters tape. I made random shapes by sticking some of the strips together to make larger blobs, wedges, and strips. I then applied the shapes to about a fifth to a quarter of the surface of the rifle in no particular order or pattern and then sprayed the brown on the whole stock. I repeated the same method with the tape but covered more of the stock and made sure some of the fresh tape overlapped the old painted over tape in some places. Then I sprayed on the tan. I let everything dry and then pulled all the tape off. the contrast was pretty stark, and the tan seemed really light to me. So, I took all three colors and oversprayed the stock from about 2 feet away to get the tan to darken up a bit and get the brown and green to lighten up a bit. After everything dried I applied some satin Polyurethane to help make it a bit more durable. (Did all the same to the scope as well.) Reassembled after a day of drying, just to make sure all the 'tacky' was gone from the poly.

Remington, Winchester, or Ruger all seem pretty easy to get in that price range... Savage-for the budget minded. Remington if you need a bit more refinement of the action. Savages are true sleepers in the market. Not super sexy or tacti-cool but very accurate and solid performing rifles. I feel you get more performance than they charge you for. Remington is the 'standard' for tactical/practical bolt guns in the U.S. Police SWAT, and Mil sharpshooters have been using rifles based on the 700 action for decades. Winchester is nice as well and the controled feed is great for reliable feeding and extraction. Ruger is another solid performer but some folks don't have as much faith in their alloy action. Never seen a broken one though.

Here are my rifles, minus the AK and Mosin, The first is my Marlin 336 30-30, this was my first gun. My dad bought it for me when I was 14. It has taken down 4 deer. The next is my M-38 Turk Mauser in 8mm. This gun shoots straight as anything, its a little bulky for hunting though, if I ever make it to Africa it will go with me. Plus we finally found a bayonet for it. It looks really cool. The last is my Thompson/Center Hawken .50 cal. Its it quite a fun muzzle loader to shoot. When you set the trigger, you can almost blow on it and the gun will go off, its a blast. But, yeah, these are my rifles. Marlin 336 30-30 M-38 Turk Mauser 8mm Thompson/Center Hawken .50

Here are a couple of pics of my CZ 527 Varmint in 204. It will do my handloads into 1/2 MOA all day long and with its' set trigger it is a dream to shoot. This is the second one I have picked up. What is interesting is it has a 25 1/2 inch barrel and a thinner fore end compared to other that has 24 " tube. I selected this one at Sportsman's Warehouse. They opened up four rifles for me to pick from and this was #4 of the batch and by far the prettiest. This one has a Nikon Buckmaster 6X18 SF scope. Greg
