Well, last week I went out with my Son, Brother and Father in Law to set up Camp for the upcoming Berry Camp trip my family plans on going on. We traveled about 4 hours by boat to the Campsite, which is about 60 miles East of home, but we traveled over 100 miles, because the River is confused and winds so much!

Every year around the end of July towards the middle of August, we head out to gather Cloudberries, commonly called Salmon Berries(Because they look like the Roe of a Salmon). My oldest Daughters will be going with there Grandfather and Grandmother for about a week. In this time they will gather about 150 to 200 gallons of the berries for Winter food storage.

I thought I would post some pictures of the Camp Site, my Grandfathers site, that I have spend many Summers and has great memories. This trip was special, my Grandfather past last Fall and he always loved going to Berry Camp because it was were he grew up and was born very nearby the Camp. The Camp Site has been in our family longer than he can remember. He always said the food gathered in that area was his favorite, because it tasted pure and was away from the pollutions of people.

We actually had a bit of free time to fish a little, only caught a Pike. We did catch a Broad Whitefish, but I did not get pics.

That's awesome. I'd love to go fishing up there. What do you do with the berries? Make jam/jelly?

I saw something on TV last year about Akutaq, very interesting combination of ingredients in that stuff. They say if it is not made correctly it is completely un-palateable but when done right is quite tasty.

Nice pictures James. I hope your family has a great time at berry camp carrying on family traditions. thumb.gif

Went very well, they came home on the 17th and returned with about 110 gallons of Salmon Berries to split between 4 households. Now it is on to the Blackberries and Cranberries!

Wow that is awesome! I love the land up there..though I was picturing snow.. I guess you're more of the south west of state?

I hope one day, I can live in a beautiful remote area such as that, and live partially off the land!
