Do you guys mess with barrel break in, cleaning after every shot etc.? I've never done it, but I have an unfired AR and I was curious if it was worth the hassel.I've been shooting rifles for a long time and never said "Oh crap, I can't hit the ground with this thing, I should have broken in the barrel", but I might be missing out. Thoughts? FQ13

If it's a match grade stainless barrel I'd consider a break-in. If it's chromelined, there really is no point.

Will a shot of Rem Oil do it, or do I want to use grease? If so, please advise me. FQ13

QUOTE (Rampy @ November 1st 2009 1:09 PM) Nope, run a bore snake through her, lube up the bolt/bcg nice and wet and go have fun.... AOS: Moonbase Alpha. Greetings Rampy...and to G, Ohio Class-Doc, Neil, FQ, et al! How do you guys prep your boresnakes for passage down the tube? Have you ever tried any of the other flexible "bore rods?" I've never used anything other than traditional rods, patches and jags in the past, but never looked back after discovering the pocket sized flexible nylon Patch Worm some months ago. I could not pass on it @ $15.50 for the eight caliber "Patch Worm" kit, $4.95 for fifty hard absorbent felt buttons, and $6.95 for five-hundred 100% cotton flannel patches finished on both sides. Pulling this device without any cleaning heads added to the naked Patch Worm (the green flex-rod only) provides smooth 20 cal. resistance. Adding the white cleaning head cranks it up to .22 cal which is snug enuf with one single cotton patch on the worm, and stacking on one or two felt buttons seems to work as well for heavier fouling when I examine my bore with the $4.95 passive Patch-Worm Barrel-Lite. Recent experience with KG KG-12 Big Bore Cleaning Solvent as a starter and Weapon Shield as a finisher on the PM was impressive, but being a new mouse-trap junkie I'd appreciate your seasoned comments on this particular device. Chrome lined then just shoot it.
Unlined and you should do a proper break-in.

On my Boresnake, I put some Hoppes #9 on the front end around the brush and a couple drops of RemOil near the tail.
Don't put grease down the barrel.

Any rifle that I'm using for precision shooting gets the break in. My blasting/short range comp guns I just shoot. I'm not trying to shoot gnats at 200 yards with my Mini-14, and I'm not mowing down rows of zombies with my SPR.

unless its a bench gun setup for long range precision shooting, then I wouldn't worry about it... these barrels are far more accurate than I will ever be.

When i got my DPMS chrome muly upper I did as best I could with break in. This of course is just my opinion. I ran 25 rounds with a patch after every shot. After that I just shot it like I stole it. I gave it a good clean and lube before I ever shot as well. Can or did I improve my accuracy. Beats me. My peace of mind was taken care of after 25 rounds. Mine is a pretty good shooter if ya ask me. Of course I cheat and mounted a big 3-9x scope on it. A chin weld but Iam gonna take a pieveof tape and put it ob where I get the best chin weld and go with it!! I dont see where it will hurt. I would go and do any full mag dumps on the initial shooting outing, Get it warmed up and then let her cool down. Wich would be a good time to run a patch of oil and then a dry one down her throat. Just my 2 cents...ohhhh and what kind of rifle if I may ask. And get some pics!!! Grizzybear

QUOTE (FlagYJ @ November 2nd 2009 3:48 PM) whats your breakin procedure? First 10 shots, clean after each shot Next 25 shots, clean after every fifth shot Shoot ten and clean until I get to 100 If I still had the target, I'd post the 3/4" four shot group I got at 200 yards with my SPR. And the 1/4" group I got at 100 yards with my Rem 700. Jim

I figure any quality gun i buy will probably last at least my lifetime if i take care of it. So whats a little time spent breaking in a new barrel properly? If it did no good i dont think so many gun and barrel makers would recommend it. As far as only doing it to high end target type rifles well i would like all my guns to be as accurate as possible what ever i use them for. Dont know about chrome lined barrels tho, dont have any.

It's kinda hard to not pay attention to Gale McMillan's advice when, I believe, it was a McMillan barrel that set the world record with a 5 shot .009 inch group at 100 yards.

My barrel is chrome lined. I tookt he rifle apart, cleaned it real well, used Slip2000 to lube it all up good, ran a bore snake down it, then headed off to the range and ran 150 rounds through it.
