More questions,

If a guy wanted to buy a legal sear or M-16, what would be the total cost?
Gun cost?
Sear cost? Transfer fees?
Anything else?
How hard is it to just find a legal one that is actually for sale?
Is a signature from the county sheriff required? It won't happen in my county if it is. Is there a way to get around that.
I was told once that the license followed the gun or sear and that they could be loaned to another as long as the license accompanied the gun.

Is that true?

In other words if a friend in a more NFA friendly county bought one would he have to be present for some one else to use it?

I have fired legal Tommys, BARs, M-16, and even an M2. I have fire Uzis with a class III dealer. By far the most fun in my opinion is the M-16.

I don't know why it seems like too much money , cause I spend that on my old car and 4WD hobbies. smile.gif

1, 2, 3 - see subguns.com classifieds or sturmgewehr classifieds for current MG prices, availability, etc. Be aware that there are transferable machine guns and there are non transferable. The Post 86 dealer sample guns are non transferable, as well as the pre-86 dealer sample guns. You can tell them apart by the low prices, and usually being brand new. Expect a M16 or conversion (LL, RDIAS, etc) to run you north of 10k, with the exception of the LL as they are 7-8k.

Tax stamp is $200. Transfer fee depends on your dealer. I've heard $25-150, could be more, could be less.
some localities require different things, louisiana for example requires a state permit prior to the federal paperwork.

there is no license, it is simply a tax form, and a tax stamp. the form 4 proves that your item is legally registered, calling it a permit or a license is incorrect. and no, it does not follow the registered item in that you can just give the form to whoever. the owner must be present wherever the registered item is, along with a copy of the paperwork. it must also be stored in a way that the owner is the only person that has access. Registering to a LLC/trust can bypass some of this, as your corporate officers and whatnot can have access to the company's assets.

Same thing goes for the CLEO signature. Corp/trust doesn't need that, the fingerprints, the photo. The sheriff isn't the only one who can sign. local Police chief, state police chief, judge, couple others. Google can probably turn up the whole list.

Shhhh, quit telling people that. They will continue to do so and the ammo prices won't ever come back down.
