Ammo degradation

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the discount prices during the holidays.

Shot a few hundred rounds of DT today and didn't have a single problem.

My question is: at what temperatures will ammunition powder begin to degrade over time? I keep my ammo in my safe and the garage gets into the 40's during the winter months. Should I be concerned?

I would think that about the only thing that really affects ammunition over time is degradation of the case, thus allowing contamination of the powder with water or other nearby compounds. There's surplus ammo from the WWII era that is still viable.

Of course, this is just my .01 - not even worth the obligatory .02 lol_2.gif, so I'm sure Mike and others will have more technical reasons to agree/disagree, but with decent storage conditions I think ammo can withstand moderate temperature extremes for years without degrading.

Actualy its the modern primer that is the problem and the major weak piont . New lead free primers using Aluminum oxide degrade much faster. Your best bet is to seal and purge out any O2 with a noble gas like Nitrogen.

I don't know if DT is using the lead free primers but Mike told me that his ammo should be gtg for 30+ years if stored properly. Something to consider if the Socialists.....I mean Dems get their insane ammo tax passed. JKB

1. What primer does DT use, an alternative to AlO2 (am unaware of content of primer, but wasn't Mercury Fulminate formerly employed {Hg(ONC)2; prepared by dissolving Mercury in Nitric Acid and precipitating with Ethanol)} ?

2. How does one pack/purge/Nitrogen/seal-- how to pack, purge, nitroginate the space, seal ? Using a storage box, Vacuum sealer & Nitrogen canister ? Any websource to recommend ?
