S&W M&P 15

Colt .22 M4 & M16

Ruger SR-22

Remington 597 VTR

Seems like everyone is trying to get into the market of the AR/.22 copies. I think that's a good thing. Due to costs
and wanting to teach my family to shoot I really want something similar to an AR.

I was at the gun shop yesterday and was able to hold & see all four of these up close. They were busy as heck due to
Deer hunting season opening this Sunday so the guy was in a hurry, don't blame him.I'm going to read up on them and
go back and take another look.

I'll say right now the Remington is plain cheezy so it's out.

The Ruger, I would bet is going to be a fine rifle. It's based on the 10/22 action and takes the same mags.

The Colt looked and felt like an AR, but I've read there are quality issues.

The S&W looked and felt good also, but have also read about a few quality issues.

I'm going to keep reading and go back with an open mind and a long list of things to look at and play with
before I make up my mind on anything.

OR......

Just spend a few extra hundees and get a dedicated upper ( Spikes, CMMG, Tactical Solutions ) that takes
Black Dog Machine mags ??

I like the "Colt'' best because it looks the most authentic, but its still not a real AR. I vote for a dedicated .22 upper! And your right about that Remmy-cheesy is the word for it. I love my 597, but man, what were they thinking there?

The Remmy and the Ruger while they may be functionally fine are butt ugly. I would say get the dedicated upper and well heck what good is an upper without a lower. smiley_smartass.gif

I too would vote for a dedicated upper. The rest just scream cheese to me.

Kinda .22 AR junkie here. I own both dedicated uppers (Spikes & TacSol) and S&W 15-22. Previous owner of a Colt M4 OPS. The Colt was the worst purchase I have made in several years. Pot metal parts, terrible trigger, and difficult to break down and clean. I was seduced by it's tacticool looks. But beauty was only skin deep.

The S&W 15-22 is the closest to an AR that is currently available. Breaks down just like M&P 15, can easily upgrade trigger to any AR replacement trigger. Can hang many accessories on it. Bolt stays open after last shot, and even after magazine is removed. I had a problem with the extractor. S&W sent me a shipping label for repair. Took them about two weeks total (including shipping both ways) to get the rifle back to me. They also sent me 2 new magazines for my inconvenience. Great customer service. And extra magazines can be purchsed for ~$20.00 each.

The Ruger looks like a dressed up 10-22. So should be able to upgrade it. The Sig 522 is another possibility, but it is just starting to become available.

Great thing is so many choices. oh yea.gif

None of those would be my first choice. They are all good rifles as I understand it, but put me down as another vote for dedicated upper.
