To help eliminate unnecessary waste of money on trying to find the ammo that works great with the black gun I am trying to find a common denominator here. I know that ammo is getting cheaper but money is money why waste it on buying twenty different brand to find one that fits the rifle Could you please list the rifle manufacturer w / twist and ammo brand and grain. This includes people who bought or made their uppers Thanks

Daniel Defense 1:7 twist 16in upper I just built her(eta: meaning the rifle not the upper, bought the upper assembled) and she's only got about 300rnds through her. I've used some old Federal .223 that my dad had laying around, it was 55gr I do believe. I picked up some Centurion .223 55gr FMJ ammo from ammotogo.com. 500rnds for $193 shipped. I'll be running through the last of it next weekend, but so far no issues. Obviously shooting .223 is going to be cheaper on the wallet, and while I plan on picking up maybe another 1000rnds of that, I do plan on getting some good quality 5.56 for real desperate SHTF stuff. Also recommendation, which you may already know, I'd stay away from steel cased ammo. Not good over the long haul, but that's just my experience and what has been recommended to me. http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/pro...23-556-fmj-ammo

My choices
LMT M4 1:7 barrel
Federal and Privi XM193 (55gr FMJ) good all around plinking (M855 good but more expensive)
Remington 55gr Accutip or Winchester 55gr Silvertip (both .223) varmint hunting
Hornaday TAP 5.56 75gr T2 Home Defense (.223 60gr if you have 1:9 barrel)
Avoid Rem UMC .223 55gr FMJ inconsistent quality control, numerous malfunctions, poor accuracy

S&W M&P 15T 16" 1:9 Has shot everything I've put in it without any misfires (even junk Rem UMC) so far, only five different manufacturers though. Now on to reloads for better accuracy.

QUOTE (Nwatson99 @ November 17th 2009 9:21 AM) Ammo I would never spend a nickel on for my AR15's are: Remington UMC Wolf Was blind-sided with an unexpected opportunity to first fire a new JP Supermatch SS barrel and the only available ammo was some Rem UMC that was left over from my first gun-show buy last year. Opting to conform with suggested barrel break-in with this particular black rifle, I pulled three wet patches between each of six five-shot groups and then packed it in and went home because the amount of crappola residue that the first pull produced on each of those six five-shot groups was incredibly heavy. In that this was my first experience with regimented cleaning for barrel "break-in", I'm not sure what to expect with any ammo, but that amount of combustion debris certainly caused me to pack it in for the day and lock the remaining UMC down deep in the dungeon. I'd appreciate further details on the downside of using lower quality ammo, including but not limited to UMC. Beyond the obvious increased cleaning demand, is permanent physical damage a realistic probability, and if so, where would the most damage likely occur? Doc

Here are the different brands of ammo I've used thus far, and my observations regarding them. All have been fired through an ArmaLite M15 mid-length w/ 16" barrel.
BRASS CASED
-- Centurion 55grn FMJ: Cycles great, no malfunctions so far, about 3-4 MOA -- DRS 55grn FMJ: Cycles great, no malfunctions so far, about 3-4 MOA (casings have some dings, but apparently it doesn't affect function) -- Federal 55grn FMJ: Cycles great, no malfunctions so far, about 3-4 MOA
I have no complaints about these three brands, and am satisfied with them.
STEEL CASED
-- Brown Bear 62grn JHP: Cycles well (occasional slow-to-cycle, but no short-strokes), about 4-5 MOA -- Tula 55grn FMJ: Frequent short-strokes, excessive chamber fouling, about 5-6 MOA -- Wolf 55grn FMJ (black box): Frequent short-strokes, excessive chamber fouling, about 5-6 MOA -- Wolf Military Classic 55grn FMJ: Cycles well (occasional slow-to-cycle, but no short-strokes), about 5-6 MOA
Because of their horrible reliability in my rifle, I stopped using the Tula and Wolf black-box ammo. I still use Brown Bear occasionally, and have no major complaints. But I make sure to swab the chamber before switching to brass-case ammo.
