i'm gonna hit 5k tomorrow if i drive very far. i am due for the first 5k check up/service. looking in the manual it seems it's all pretty simple stuff. oil and oil filter change being the biggest things for the first service. if i do it myself and save receipts and/or take pics of the recipt and odometer, can i just do it myself and not void my warranty?

i really don't want to take it to toyota because my local dealership is a joke, and the dealership i bought it from is a few hours away.

also, will i void my warranty if i simply go a few hundred miles over 5k? like 5,100? how strict are they on that? i've never owned a new automobile before, so i am clueless. if i need to, i guess i can just take it to mieneke or midas tomorrow and have them do it, but i'd rather save the coin and do it myself if that is acceptable.

what'cha think? dontknow.gif

any clues? the manual that came with the truck is more like a legal contract than anything else. doh.gif

definitely do-it yourself friendly. but i think for the warranty to be valid the service must at least be done by a licenced mechanic. check with the dealership to make sure, if it does not void the warranty, have at it.

welcome back stranger, hardly see you in here anymore. if you ain't hunting you're fishing, or spending time with your better half really.gif

take care bud.

You can do it yourself if you save the receipts. It will not void the warranty if you do it yourself. Just check you manual and see what else is required.

I never go to the dealer and have never had any issues when it came to a warranty claim. My first two new ones were dodge and needed warranty work in the first year. My Mazda 3 is at 1 yr old and have not had to take it back. Just keep records. Document everything.

Save all of your paperwork from the parts store. Another thing some people do is to pay a garage $1.00 to dispose of the old oil and save that paperwork as well.
Just make sure that the oil you use meets the O.E. specs and you should be in good shape.
If your vehicle is a newer Toyota you probably wont have any trouble to begin with. Most are good quality cars.

Local shop puts me back $80 for a glorified oil change and tire rotation I hate paying, but I am 5 min from the shop, so I drop it off and get some work done and they call me about an hour later, so I can take care of other crap.

But then I got my Addax Gas piston AR. Sure I still have to keep a few small replacement parts, but I'll let you kick me in the balls for every malfunction I have with my Addax GPU, thats how reliable it is!

So far we are at, hold on, let me check..... ZERO!

I just hit 5k on my Tacoma and had the dealer do it. It was $80 but that really isn't a big deal every 5k.

Read your owners Manual. It should say if you can do it yourself. Like mentioned save your receits and keep records. I keep all my records in the garage in a plastic folder one for each vehicle. I will not pay someone to work on my vehicle unless I have to. I would look and see where your oil filter is located to see if what type of filter wrench you can use for it. I prefer the kind that goes on a ratchet or a strap wrench. Make sure you pour some oil in the new filter as much as you can to keep from running the pump dry on startup. If you are able some oil filters are mounted horizontally. One more thing I have never owned a Toyota but every new vehicle I have ever owned the factory oil filter was tighter than hell. On a new vehicle I change my oil and filter after 500 miles.

i ended up just taking to a jiffy lube down the street. i just kept my itemized (sp?) receipt showing what all they did, and i stapled it into my service manual.

i'm about to click 8,000 so i'll be doing it again in another month or so. kickcan.gif

Most of those employees are teenagers and have less experience than anyone. I've always service my own stuff and never had an issue with warranty. I think it's illegal for the OEM to force the consumer to let the EOM do the service work.
