OK, so I want a .308 rifle, but am not sure i want a bolt rifle.

I want an M1A but they are so darn pricey.

So I have been trying to decide if I should get a Savage Bolt rifle. Then lo and behold out comes the Keltec .308 bullpup.

I am thinking "Awesome!" and start getting excited when I hear some good things about the accuracy....

Then I hear the price.... WTF?!?!?!

All of Keltec's guns are relatively cheap... so why is it the .308 is $1800!!!!!!

Is there some unwritten rule that high caliber semi's need to be over $1500?!?!?! WTF?!?!?!

Then again I can barely feed the .223 right now so.... .308 is even more pricey...

argh.... why so friggin frustrating...

But then I got my Addax Gas piston AR. Sure I still have to keep a few small replacement parts, but I'll let you kick me in the balls for every malfunction I have with my Addax GPU, thats how reliable it is!

So far we are at, hold on, let me check..... ZERO!

Buy the Savage. I have two and love them both. I have also never known a single person who didn't love their Savage. They make some of the best barrels and out of the box guns on the planet

I got Michelle a 308 Savage for a deer rifle. Made the mistake of giving it to he older brother. Well it went from a nice 7# and some change to 12+ and looks like every Tacticool lover idea of a Sniper rifle. The only pic I have of the rifle is in the Daughters paws and I will not or allow them to post their mugs on the web. I gotta get a pic of that thing.

Here is the model I like : http://www.savagearms.com/10fcp.htm

Would likely only scope it then put on a bi-pod and be done.

Still looking at a grand...

I've got a Remington SPS Tactical (.308) with a flash suppressor, H-S Precision Stock, Leupold Scope and a Bi-pod. All of that combined ran me just over a thousand bucks. I know the R700 may not compare with some of the other firearms mentioned in this thread, but I love it and it was far more affordable than a lot of the other .308s I saw. I do love the M1A though, especially the SOCOM 16, but you're right, the prices on those are outrageous.

Mine:

A pic before putting the AICS on it:

Remington 700 5R $900
(Stainless 24' Bull Barrel)
Accuracy International Chassis System $800

Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50mm scope with NPR1 reticule $1700

CB, you should be able to pick up a new bolt gun for under $1000 without glass. (That is, if you don't mind having a bolt gun). Most of the semi-auto's are going to through you over the 1k mark.

If you really want an M1A save up and shop around. If you want something special just have one built, you can get a reasonable USGI parts kit for I think $675 less receiver, bolt and barrel. Bolts seem to be around $200 and barrels around $300, then just need a receiver and a gunsmith... I will say it's still not as cheap as a bolt gun but you'll get something better than most out of the box SA Inc. rifles. Plus you can spread the cost out a little rather than it taking a big wet bite out of your wallet. You can also pick your barrel length and contour which is nice since you may want the 18.5" barrel instead of the 22". If you want THE receiver get an LRB. Hammer forged and machined in the US, I have one of their M25 receivers and it's a work of art. You pay for that though so be ready to have a seizure when you see the price tag...

So, I have the availability to get a Savage Model 10FCP-K – with AccuTrigger™, AccuStock™, and Detachable Box Magazine for $740.00 (NIB).

After seeing the price as $870.00, I am thinking that is a pretty good deal. Any compariable suggestions?

Good deal, Sir. You won't find much better in the price range with as many stock improvements.

Even an aviation officer in "anti-submarine" planes should get a deal every now and again. thumbsup.gif

For the M1A a large part of the price is in the cost of machining. Several complex angles and multiple passes.
Making one shoot really accurately is a bit of a trick as well as they have a lot of reciprocating mass and action flex due to the design.

Teh Kel-Tec is new and is also a bit of a complex piece with severl moving parts.

The AR platforms are at least modular with fewer reciprocating parts and fairly easy to accurize. The market drives the price on these as well as materials cost compared to the 5.56 counterparts.

I have a Savage model 10 that is pre accu-trigger and pre accu-stock that I'm very happy with performance wise. I'm building my .308 AR over time as I can affoard it. My M1A I've had for a long time and even then the NM model that I bought was going around $1450 (1998). I just happened to find someone who needed $1100 bucks more than the pre-ban NM rifle that was still unfired and in the box. Been to a few service rifle matches and one fleet match, before I switched to ARs. Still can't bring myself to sell it though.

Savage makes fantastic rifles, period. The out of the box accuracy is phenomenal and upgrades are not over priced.
The most accurate and dependable bolt gun that I own is a pre-accu trigger Savage in 30-06, I love that rifle and no matter what I own or sell in the future this one will be mine as long as I am alive.
When I get around to having some extra cash I plan on doing a .308 bolt rifle and it will start it's life as a factory savage rifle, guarenteed.

Hey Thumper, you own one serious bad-ass rifle.
