You guys are like sharks! We put chum in the water & you guys just come. It's scary! To me It is the Holy Grail of ballistics in every way, but it's just that I want a round that's easy to obtain when the SHTF or money is tight. To be honest, I bought my M&P .40 because it was faster than a .45, more powerful than a 9mm, & a hell of a lot cheaper than the 10mm! Now I want a 1911 in .45, but have to wait for some freed up cash! I have yet to shoot a 10mm, & I can't wait for the day I can, but unless it is more abundant, I'll stick with the .40 & .45.

You realize ofcourse that your .40 (short and wimpy) is less powerful and not as accurate as the 10mm, right? There is a review of the .40 in the new Guns magazine (free online). Check it out.

^Come on now, don`t piss off potential newcomers. I have a G23 for the simple reason the g29s.f.`s were`nt available at the time. I carry my 10 in colder weather where layers aid in concealment. The 23`s a good little piece(& very accurate btw), but a s.f.29 w/ a spare .40 barrel for plinkin` might be my next purchase.

I do have a .45 & a AR that will shoot any .223 or 5.56 & last I checked, nobody in a military uniform doesn't cary 10mm. Not alot of zombies will have them ether. Have to get a 9mm barrel & mags for the M&P as well. If nothing happens & I start making the cash needed to get a 10mm, then I'd love to have one to carry all the time. I love the round, but it's just to damn scarce! Ok!!!!!!

I don't wanna PO any newcomers, but I am always intrigued by the SHTF argument.
The 45 ACP, 38 Special, 9mm and 40S&W ammo are gonna go immediately, cause everyone has one of those guns. The 10mm Auto will stick around a little longer, cause not so many have those. It will go eventually too. This was true during the Obama scare. The local stores that carried 10mm auto, had it long after the major calibers were long gone.
Ultimately, if you wanna keep shooting in a SHTF, you better have it ahead of time, or have the ability to make it. In either case, popularity matters not one wit.

As you noted, after the scare the 10mm also went following the more popular calibers. But the scare has not disappeared. The scary guys are just busy with other things right now. I'm sure we are in for it in some way or other in the next 3 years. I don't think the level of hatred for gunowners has ever been greater. Meanwhile people have hoarded and continue to hoard ammo of all types. Now in a nasty SHTF sceario, my first choice for an auto pistol would always be the full-power (41 magnum power), versatile, straight-shooting 10. In such a scenario, you are not likely to go and use up ammo for practice, right? Doubt the local range is going to be doing business as usual. So the question becomes how much ammo should you hoard?

A coworker got me interested in 10MM a few years back and after shooting a few rounds out of his Colt Delta Elite I was ooked . A couple of years of intense hunting I finally got a couple , a couple of years of shooting so-so manufactured ammo I decided I needed to learn to reload my own . My 1006 is now my hunting season gun I carry everywhere in case a tasty bambi shows up . My favorite load is a 155gr Hornady over 1.8 gr of IMR 800-X ...... thanks to the 10MM I'm no longer hooked on computers LOL ...well sort of , I am here on the forum .

I am one of the early posters on this forum, because I have been shooting the 10mm since 1991! Since I own 5 handguns chambered for the 10mm Auto, I believe I have heard every untruth (that's a lie for all of your from Rio Linda, CA) promulgated since the cartridge's initial release in 1983! You MUST have the abilty to separate fact from fancy, or "winnow the fly dung from the pepper." Overcoming the firmly ensconced "old wife's tales" concerning the cartridge is the most difficult to hear continually resurrected as are most other "old chestnuts." As difficult as they are to stomach, I will continue to kindly offer the best intellectually-based refutations, and as gently as possible. How else should you provide understanding to the ignorant? Through gentle, positive affirmation of the truth.
Time and the continued development of the 10mm has served to teach us that it is the ONLY true "magnum" autoloading pistol cartridge that has ever really made it into the world of "mainstream" shooting.
I was initially dismayed with the merging of the Forums, but I have learned to live with it.
I think I'll stick around.

I don't base my caliber selection on unrealistic "SHTF" scenarios. It would all be impossible to get unless you steal it.
You think it's hard to get .40 ammo? Try something real hard to get like .41 mag, 38-40, or my pet .40 Super. But they are all great calibers and they are great to shoot.
"SHTF"? Maybe if I tie them together like a bolas...... any zombie llamas out there?

Personally, I think this business of getting guns only based on a SHTF premise is foolish.
The gun community has been been worrying about SHTF on line as long as I can remember, and that was in the days of dial-up and the NRA buleting board, one letter at a time.
We talk about SHYF, but my guess is that it's not really something we are going to see. Living for that is kind of foolish. I have enough guns in popular calibers, so having some in 10mm isn't going to cause me to miss out on anything. I have other calibers too.

Not because I am worried about some post apocalyptic scenario. I also have a wide variety of calibers, just because they are a variety.
