155 gr barnes x is back on the DT website.
Nobody here ever posted any gel results for it. Today I read a post over on Glocktalk's 10 Ring in which a guy says he inquired about the gel results. He states that McNett responded that the gel results are:
15.5" penetration in ordinance gel
.84" expansion
"In ordinance gel: 15.5" and .84" expansion. Full expansion is at 6.5" They give a larger temporary wound channel than a heavier slower JHP, but they give the same penetration depth as our 180gr."
This is interesting in that on another forum a Corbon rep claims they designed their round to penetrate 18" in gel. I say it's interesting because the DT load is 200fps faster at 1400 fps versus Corbon at 1200 fps.
The Cor-Bon claim is perfectly plausible because normally lower velocity = less expansion = greater penetration. Of course, the reverse holds true as well, i.e., higher velocity = greater expansion = less penetration. The trick is to try to get maximum expansion while still getting adequate penetration.
For my money, I'd choose the Double Tap load in this case. I'd be happy to swap greater penetration than the Double Tap load's 15"-16" for its very impressive .84" of expansion.
