For carry and home defense - factory loads.

For competition and hunting...the sky's the limit. (Pull out the press, pull out your reload data recipe book, and reload to your hearts content).

I am the opposite. When I win the lotto, or otherwise retire, I will spend lots of putter time casting, swaging, and reloading my own stuff.

My personal load depends on the season and where I am.
For lightly clothed bad guys in crowded areas I would prefer a 135-155 moving fast.
For more solo encounters in remote areas or back woods I like 180-200 grain or even a hardcast if 4 legged beasts are likely.
I use handloads for everything as most 10mm is hard to find.
For a few Power Pistol loads, check this link:

Nothing that I know of.

I am going to guess it should be standard deviation of 21 FPS.

I think ES stands for "extreme spread".

Yup! thumb.gif
...and sorry bout' the shorthand. I should of said Extreme Spread 21 fps. I was typing off my field notes. rolleyes.gif
ES is not the same as SD (standard deviation).
To get the ES (Extreme Spread), the lowest velocity is subtracted from the highest velocity.
Most chronographs automatically give you both ES, SD and Average Velocity, # Shots, etc. (depending on the model) after each shot string.
Most factory ammo ES's are between 30-75 fps IME.

So a 21 is really low and desirable. Over 75fps, at least IMHO, and you have to question quality control or quality of hand loads based on many factors. smile.gif

I asked this same question months ago for 9mm,10mm, 40S&W,45acp. Got good answers. Then started doing research-shootings and court cases. When caring as a personal defense in city/urban settings factory loads ONLY-defense attorney -if perp lives or family sues will have a field day with reloads. You end up being the ugly American Right Wing Nut Job-aka Wing Nut.
If like in my case in the back woods of Idaho I can and do carry my reloads @ known values for factory rounds but with different bullet type i.e. hunting round. Now if some dude wants to cause me to pop a cap on his arse then I will be just a normal hunter that had to defend himself with (and you better understand this-research it) equal force after if possible and made known to aggressor I did all that I could to prevent putting a bullet in central mass. NEVER EVER SAY I"M GOING TO KILL YOU! I have a box of factory loads that cost $40.00 just for CCW and I load the mags with gloves on. NEVER touch the cartage with un gloved hands=better to defend in court. I am not an attorney but did a lot of research and asked questions from LEO's and have pulled in self defense 5 times and shot once.

You should carry factory loads for self defense / personal protection. You do not want to be on the stand trying to explain why you made a load for a gun to kill a person. You probly will not get convicted in a criminal case. It is the civil case in which they would try to say you made that load up just to kill another person with. Spend the money order you a box of factory loads for carry or home defense. I love the 10mm and enjoy shooting it. I personaly will not carry it for urban protection. I carry a 40. cal. You do not want a pass through to hurt someone else.

Keep in mind that FBI paper is geared towards Law Enforcement Officers. In the course of my duties I have protections the normal citizen does not have. Plus we all carry Factory ammo that has been test to deliver max damage and not pass through a person.

What's the best or what do I carry?

The best is pretty subjective. What your gun likes and what you can hit with to name a couple areas.

I roll my own for practice and fun. Mostly middle of the road. Have of course tried the hot nuclear stuff. Don't all handloaders?

I carry Winchester 175gr Silvertips. Like a lot of things in life they are a compromise. Just come closest to what I'm most comfortable with.

But...what do I know?

Jon

What to carry is simple. Carry the gun you are most familiar with and have the best gun hadling skills with.

I carry:
180xtp's
11.0gr Blue Dot
WLP Primers

Working some 200xtp and 220 FP's with Power Pistol.
Still really like the Blue Dot loads. They kick like a mule out of my 4" Kimber. thumb.gif

This sounds like the best of both worlds. I am currently using some old Cor-Bon 135-grain JHP for "nightstand duty." Heavier bullets are better in the winter against heavily-clothed goblins. There are adjustments that should be made for the ambient temperatures well as the population density of your surroundings.
