Here's an odd little thought that came to mind. Has anyone done a 10mm AK conversion?
The 7.62x39 rim is very close to the 10mm rim and I bet it wouldn't take much to do a magazine well conversion. You could probably get away with direct blow-back recoil too.
It seams to me like a conversion that wouldn't take a whole lot of expensive and sophisticated equipment to pull off.

I like the idea of an AK-47-type carbine converted to chamber the 10mm Auto Pistol Cartridge. Would it make for an even better 10mm Magnum carbine? That would have enough "oomph" were it leaving a 16" chrome lined barrel! This would make for one heck of a hunting carbine! what do you say?

If Double Taps 135gr JHP leaves the barrel of the Glock 20 at 1600fps, then I can only imagine what kind of velocity it will get out of a Carbine rifle. Since some of our members have 10mm Carbines, maybe they can chime in.
Either way, I myself probably won't ever take on such a project. If I DID, I would probably shorten the receiver and upper action on top of reducing the weight of the gun.

I just got a Ruger Mini-14, pretty light and handy. There are a bunch of people who work on these and the Mini-30s, which shoot the 7.62x39. It's a lot lighter than the AK. Something to think about.

AK 10mm conversion? If it could be done, I would want it in nothing else than a Krinkov platform. I like the idea.

Talk about the "bad boy" of the SBR set! Low recoil, smashing power (from a full-house, 200-grain Double Tap load.) All that meat, and no potatoes!

Just to add one more twist to a very interesting project.

Add a century arms(or other source) bullpup kit.... a short package with a full length AK barrel... or less if you want it.... Yes you might have to SBR it, but talk about a compact hard hitting CQ monster...

Though the problem with the bullpups is always trigger. But with a custom gun it might be solvable...

I've been able to give bullpups target rifle triggers in the past. That DOES sound like a nifty idea.

I can't have a Krinkov in my state, but a 16" barreled AK in 10mm would make for one heck of a hot ticket! Close range smashing power from a 16" AK barrel would be hot stuff! Properly rifled (as to retain accuracy) the 10mm has sufficient power at 100 yards to be an efficient hunting carbine. At close range, (read: 30 yards) a 155-grain Double Tap 10mm GDHP load would be devastating! Talk about reliable (and violent) expansion! This would be an interesting sub-gun "exercise".

Controllable, effective and nasty! That combination is hard to beat!

I'd really be interested in building an AK pistol in 10mm to accompany my G20... maybe even make it an AOW really.gif

I second the idea for a krinkov size but even better would be a Bizon helical mag!!! If you could manage to get 40 or 50rds of 10mm..... oh yea.gif

Gotta ask, why would you want to reduce the power of the AK, and add to that the cost of shooting a very expensive pistol cartridge?

For those of us that reload, its not anymore expensive than reloading 45 or 40.

Also if your a diehard 10mm freak like us, anything different that shoots the 10mm is worth it. Its not so much reducing the AK's power, its increasing the 10mm's power. You just have to updgrade to get more power.

Plus it has major coolness factor thumb.gif

Yes I can see the coolness factor, but I would hate to have to chase the brass that came out of an AK, and lord knows what state it would be in when you find it. I have enough of that issue with my G20. 10mm AR would be more my style if I were to get serious about something like this. But honestly that's what the 6.8 is all about for me.

For AK I'll stick with buying 1K bricks of wolf, and save time on the press for other things like 10mm 44mag 500mag, and 6.8

There was a thread over at AK Files about doing a .500 S&W conversion. IIRC someone had posted the case head dimension of 7.62x39 was closer to .50 Beowulf which also has a rimless case. A member there had already done a .44 mag conversion, pretty cool. Good point though, I don`t mind losing steel cases, brass on the other hand.
