While I have been shooting for about 20 years, I have just picked up my first AR.
While shooting at 65 yards, I’m getting 2in groups without a problem, at 10 yards; I’m all over the paper, with a bench…
For ref, I’m shooting old S&B steel case 55g and the rifle is a new Olympic Arms with a 16 in barrel, windage only on the carry handle and elevation only out front.

What adjustment do I need to make to my shooting to get a better group in close?

Thanks in advance for any input,

Ceddie

Ok, so at 65 you can keep 2in groups but at 10 yards your groups are spreading? Sounds like a bit of operator error here. Look at how your rifle is resting. Is the rifle being held the same for both distances?

aim small, miss small. If you can keep 2 inch groups at 65 you should be shooting a ragged hole at 10 yards.

That’s kind of what I thought…
It HAS TO be me. And what I was asking; am I using the sights incorrectly at close range or at the sights even meant to be used at that range?
I guess a better way to phrase the question might be:
Do I need to adjust my sight picture at 10 yards vs. 65 yards with the above listed sights?
If so, how?

As far as how I’m holding the rifle, I hold it the same way and orientation to my eye as I do with my Mini-14, which might be my problem.

At 65 I was getting groups of three at about 2in. when I moved in to my pistol target (just to see what I could do I was all over the pie plate. I scratched my head and set it on the bags and shot again. I had one in the paper out of three.

thanks again,
Ceddie

You should have the same sight picture at 10 as you do at 65. If you're hitting the center at 65 your groups should be low.

welcome.gif Ceddie, I agree it has to be the way you are aligning the sights, are you holding dead on at 65 and then dead on or at 6' oclock at 10?

Yeah, I'm holding it dead on at both ranges. I think I just need to learn the sight system a little better and asking for input from those who know is an easy way to gain information. Thanks a bunch for the help.
