I took my cousins 15 y.o. son out for deer last night and he shot a nice spike horn.It was one of the most satisfying hunts I've had in a long time, the excitement that he showed was rewarding. We had been on a few hunts this year, with no results{i always saw bucks when he wasn't with me,just not on our hunts].We have an antler restriction in our area[at least 3 points on 1 side]but youth hunters can take anything.I had seen this same spike quite a few times previous just not when Tyler was hunting with me.Yesterday afternoon I picked him up and we were in my ground blind by 2.He was using a NE firearms .243 single shot, and kept kidding me about giving him my 300 win mag[Weatherby Sub-Moa vanguard] for Christmas. Also were the questions about recoil, how far i can shoot--all the questions. At 4:05 out of the cedars steps out the spike at about 175 yds[my buddy and I knicknamed him "the Goat" as his anters went straight back like a goat]We let him get about 150 yds and I told Tyler to shoot if he wants him,and he asks if he can use my rifle.I said ok cranked the scope up to 10x had him rest the gun steady on the hay bale blind, relax and wait till he gave us a broadside shot. After a few seconds he said "I'm going to shoot",took the shot and the buck dropped like a rock.He was so excited and said I can't believe that he dropped! My answer was that if I wasn't confident in his shooting I wouldn't let him take the shot.He was shaking and excited for a long time,I am very proud of him.His dad is a real Ahole and dosesn't have a real role model to help him,but that is another story.Seeing this young man so happy and to make such a fine shot and realizing that this wasn't just a target to shoot made it very gratifying for me.I think that teaching someone is rewarding for everybody involved and hopefully it makes a positive impact on many lives.Sorry that this was so long-but I had to share this .--thanks-ED
