I thought all holes were small holes, but I digress. While trying to find an upper for my AR15 I keep seeing referance to big holes and small holes. Who has what and when did it happen? I have 2 Ar 15s and both pins measure .250 is this a big or small hole rifle. What can you do if you have one type upper and the other type lower?

Thanks

.250 is standard. Pre 1985 (+/- a little) Colt had a .250 hole and a weird one with a screw in the front. Post 1985 Colt had two large holes with screw until recently. Current Colts have the .250 hole. Everyone else has .250 holes.

I would suggest to stay away from the Colt Upper that way you will not have to worry about the pin issue period.

There are adapters available to mate large hole lower to small hole uppers and small hole lowers to large hole uppers. Also, if you have a large hole lower and are building an upper or just want a large hole upper or want a flat top, Daniels Defense sells upper receivers with a large front hole/flat top
