Thinking of going with 6.8 in the AR platform over .223?

Ok, my main rifle in .223 is going to be the HK 53 variant I am doing.

And I've always considered using the AR as a long range rifle, but the .308 platform seems to be a bit pricey compared to the .223 platform. (lowers, ammo etc.)

So I thought about going with a 6.8 as everything is basically exactly the same as .223 (part wise) it seems, which would at least make the initial build cheaper than a .308.

But how expensive is this caliber overall?

I'd assume the pieces and parts to put the weapon together isnt going to be much more than .223, so no big deal there.

Next 2 main questions to be asked are

How available is this round? I understand it is becoming very popular, but are they mass producing this as equal as .223 or 7.62?

How expensive is this round compared to .223 or .308?

I've seen .223 rounds go for what, .30 cents a piece roughly?

So where does 6.8 fall into all of this?

6.8 is EXPENSIVE!

check out this link...

it is a $1 a pop at the minimum.

Wow it is expensive compared to .223, but I suppose I wouldnt be shooting this as heavily as the .223 and only use this for long range applications/hunting

so it's not like youre running 200 rounds down the tube in a day when youre out trying to get some game.

I think I may look into this since it is much more compact body frame compared to .308 isnt it?

Trying to keep this weapon compact, what size barrel should i be looking at?

Is 16" enough?

I've read this caliber has a big drop after 600 yards, more than anything I would need.

slightly. the lower is the same as a .223/5.56 and the .308 lower is larger.

the difference is minimal.

I guess just the overall look, the bigger lower, the bigger mag, the larger stock and the longer barrel just make it overall a much heavier and larger weapon than 6.8 I suppose.

Does 6.8 use the same stripped upper as .223 also?

Or are there special stripped 6.8 uppers also?

nice, that will allow me to pair my Mega lower with a Mega upper and have a matching set. Nice.

I would assume Pmags also work in 6.8?

Sorry,

I meant no, Pmags won't work. The case shape is different and while you can fit 6.8 in a standard mag, they won't feed reliably.
