Did for a few years. Got a little over swish swish swish snap, "Oh damn there went another fly!" oh yea.gif

One technique I still use is float fly fishing. The best method is use some float line on an ultralight rig and trail it behind a canoe and then just float down the river.

Long pole ultralight fly fishing is becoming quite popular. It has an easer learning curve and not near as many flies lost to foliage.

Another primative method I occasionally use on survival camps is make a pole from a tree branch, strip paracord down to its seven strands. The strands act like a float line. You then attach a fly. Works very well however with no fly fishing experience, it can be very difficult since you can still face swish swish swish, snap.

bona fide flyfishing nut here...

Prefer lighter rods 9 feet or less in length, and my prey of choice are panfish and small-stream trout. Easy to reason why too - panfish, and trout in small streams will more readily take a dry fly than most other fish, or trout in larger water when there's no insect hatch going on.

I don't care if it's shaped like a penis and you gotta cradle the balls to grip it if it shoots realiably and Glocks do.

I want a brush rod 5'-6' 3 weight. I have a 6 weight already but don't have a chance to use it. Normally I use a water bobber with a fly tied on and tear them up.

I get my fly rod out on occasion in Alaska. Mostly I fish for the big boys out at sea (halibut and fresh salmon) from my boat....

Here's a pic from a while back of fly fishing on the Russian River:

nice catch man. thumb.gif

i would love to fish in alaska some day. thumbsup.gif

my BIL got a chance to do so several years ago on a guided tour, and he caught a ton of great trout. oh yea.gif

we don't have trout around here as the water is not cold enough, but one day i will go somewhere and trout fish. really.gif

actually, i take part of that back. i can drive an hour or so and find some streams with small native trout, but they are very small. nothing like what you have pictured. i bet that was a hell of a fight getting him in. smile.gif

I would love to learn how to do that. I learned to tie flies when I was a kid, but that knowledge is long gone, and in college I took flyfishing, orienteering and canoeing one semester (for credit!). I would love to fly fish!

I give it a go every now and then, I have the same problem as TJ, I tend to pull forward to soon and only through out a hook. On the bright side come April I will be doing it in La Paz, Mexico. Got my trip schedule from the 5th to the ninth.

My dad does big time. Make his own lures too.
He and I are going to the Tetons in late September, early October.
We will both be fly fishing, but I will be doing the photography thing mostly.

Hope he does well this time.
Last time we went to Yellow stone and he only caught a 2 inch baby trout.
I know he was pissed off but I busted out laughing.

I haven't done it in years, just don't have the patience. I even made some pretty good flies. The best one I ever made and had the most luck with was a Bumble Bee. Bass loved it.
